Ocular Surface Disease (Dry Eye Syndrome and related conditions) is multifactorial, inflammatory and chronic. More than 16 million Americans suffer from dry eye symptoms. Ocular Surface Disease encompasses all conditions that create inflammation on the ocular surface, a decrease in tear quality and/or quantity, and long term damage to the ocular surface. While some patients feel dryness in their eyes, others may experience excessive watering or the sensation that something is in the eye (foreign body sensation). Research has found that traditional treatments of artificial tears and home remedies do not provide long term relief and allow the condition to progress to more severe stages. While some traditional treatments can help maintain comfort when combined with new technological advances they do not treat Ocular Surface Disease.

Oasis Punctal Plugs

Depending on the causes of Dry Eye Disease, a combination of treatments is sometimes needed for effective relief. Punctal Plugs are often used in addition to other treatments to allow your own tears to remain on your eyes for a longer period of time. They are smaller than a grain of rice and are placed in the punctum (tear duct). Punctal Plugs comfortably seal the drainage of tears. This simple, non-invasive procedure is done in our office. Based on the severity of the condition, short term, medium term or long term options are available. The most common plug used is dissolvable and lasts 3-6 months or longer

Prescription Medications

Sometimes, prescription medication is necessary to fully manage Ocular Surface Disease. There are many options that range from short term steroid eye drops to long-term inflammatory modulating drops and even nasal sprays. Dr. Cline will discuss these options with you to determine the best treatment for you.

Customized Home Maintenance Therapies:

There are A LOT of products available online and in stores and it can be very discouraging and overwhelming to pick which is right for you. Unfortunately many of these products are not well regulated and do not always do what they claim. Your Dry Eye Evaluation will allow Dr. Cline to determine what is causing your symptoms and provide the best recommendations for you. Her recommendations are based on clinical research, consultation with leading Dry Eye experts, and over 15 years of professional experience with dry eye patients. You no longer need to spend money on random products in hopes that they may work. You will be given a treatment plan tailored to your health history, your symptoms, and your needs.

Your treatment plan may include some of the following:

Lid Cleanser with Tea Tree Oil
Cleans the biofilm created by bacteria on the lids and lashes, decreases inflammation, and allows the oil glands to function properly.

Hypochlorous Spray
Improves the comfort and
health of the eyes by decreasing
inflammation and treating excess bacteria.

Heat Compresses
With a microwaveable or USB heat mask thins the oil in the lids and allows it to express more naturally which creates better quality tears.
